and Clarice Carlson Utterback. Together with his sister, Darlene, and
his brother, Dave, he spent his childhood on an acreage at 93rd and “F”
Streets. He went to Oakdale Grade School and then graduated from
Westside High School in 1957. He attended the University of Omaha for
two years, and in November of 1959 started work at Western Electric,

was a member of the German-American Society and held office on their
board as trustee and as membership chairman for several years. He was
also a member of the Bars (pronounced “Bears”) organization at the
German-American Society. He worked as a tool and die maker for 30 years
until his retirement from Lucent in December of 1989.

Champion Auto Store until they sold it in June of 2000. Gene took
pleasure in managing the store and working with the customers to help
them solve their car problems. Gene enjoyed playing golf, and after
retirement he sometimes played five times a week. Gene and Arlene
