William Jack Thraen, age 77, of Omaha, Nebraska passed away at Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, Kansas, surrounded by his family on January 10, 2015.

Jack Thraen was born in Sioux City, Iowa to parents Leo J and Elizabeth Thraen on September 14, 1937. His family moved to Hastings when Jack was three, then to Omaha when he was five. He attended Lake School and Sacred Heart School and graduated in 1955 from St. Cecelia High School.

He married in 1958 and from that former union he was blessed with 4 children: Debra, William, Donald and David. On May 11, 1985 he married Violet Cagle and his family grew to include his stepchildren Ronald and Renee.

Jack was active as an officer in the Labor Union and was in the Naval Reserves from 1955 until 1963. He was employed at Western Electric as an apprentice, then a machinist and worked there for 35 years. After his retirement at the age of 55, he took up the hobby of growing orchids, was involved in orchid shows, and served two terms as President of the Greater Omaha Orchid Society.

Jack and Vi enjoyed traveling on scenic trips to National Parks, orchid shows, and visiting family across the country. He was an active member of Olive Crest United Methodist Church, serving for numerous years as Chair of Trustees. He also chaired both Administrative Council and, until recently, Staff Parish Relations committee.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Violet Kies Thraen of Omaha, Nebraska; children: Debra Carrigan and husband Lon of Danville, Illinois; William G, Thraen and wife Jay of Northridge, California; Donald Thraen of Sabetha, Kansas; David Thraen of Omaha, Nebraska; Ronald Cagle and wife Janet of McKinney, Texas; Renee Seger of Plano, Texas; grandchildren: Carla Carrigan, Emily Thraen, Mariah Emig, Sarah Jay Thraen, McKenzie Cagle, Veronica Cagle, Victoria Cagle, Brett Seger, and Hudson Seger; sister Frances Thraen of Maryville, Missouri; many nieces, nephews,extended family and friends.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents Leo and Elizabeth Thraen and granddaughter Brittney Seger.

Jack was a machinist and a former executive board officer of Local 1974. He retired 22 May 1992.
