Walter Emil, Jr. Kassube
Kassube, Walter Emil, Jr.
19 Mar 1941 - 15 May 2015
Walter Emil Kassube, Jr., 74, of Weeping Water, died Friday, May 15th,
ain Omaha.
Walt was born in Alvo NE on March 19th 1941 to Walter and Nora Kassube.
He was the first of 4 Children followed by sisters Janice, MaryAnn and
brother Tom. They moved to Weeping Water area where he attended
elementary school in rural one room school houses. He graduated from
Weeping Water High School in 1958. He was hired by Western Electric
shortly after. In December of 1959 he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was
stationed in Ft. Campbell Kentucky where he became a paratrooper and
member of the 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles. He was discharged in
December of 1962 and returned to Western Electric working there for 32
years. He later drove his own semi for 3 years and hauled dynamite for
Allison Supply until his health caused him to stop.
On July 11, 1964 he married Marilyn Kritenbrink. To this union were born
three children, son Alan and daughters Julie and Tracey. Walt was a man
of intense curiosity about everything. He had to know it worked and what
made it tick. He had many interests and hobbies through the years. In
the beginning it was model airplanes, remote control planes and on to
get a commercial pilot’s license. At this point they moved to their
acreage in the country. He spent the next few years remodeling and old
farmhouse, building a garage and began restoring old tractors and old
cars. Walt was like a sponge, soaking in all news, carpentry, mechanics,
old cars, old tractors, machinery, farming you name it.
One of his favorite things to do was taking two lane road trips all over
the United States. He always said if you want to learn about an area
stay off the interstate. He and Marilyn took several two lane trips,
going through small towns where he not only learned the history of the
area but also a few of it’s residents. Look for the pickups Marilyn,
that’s where we’re having our next meal.
In 1992 he became a grandpa for the first time and every few years
thereafter it happened again until he had 9 grandchildren. They were
indeed the highlight of his life and he took great delight in taking
them for walks, rides on the 4-wheeler and tractor and leading them into
mischief. When the doctors spoke to him about a heart transplant, he and
Marilyn discussed it and he said if I don’t do it I will die. If I do it
I have a 50/50 chance of more time with my grandchildren. Before his
transplant surgery his oldest granddaughter came to him and told him she
was carrying his first great grandchild. When he woke up Marilyn asked
if he remember what Courtney said and he said I sure do and a huge smile
crossed his face. His grandchildren were definitely the loves of his
life.
Walter is survived by wife Marilyn Kassube; two daughters, Tracey,
